Artist Profile: Mary Cassatt




Impressionist, Mary Cassatt was one off the most well known artists of her time. She was born May 22, 1844 and died June 14, 1926, she grew up in the city of Allegheny in Pennsylvania. Her parents were Robert Simpson Cassatt, a successfull stockbroker and land speculator. Her mother was named Katherine Kelso Johnston, Mary was also one of seven children.

Mary studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine arts, ignoring her fathers protests she began to learn more about art. In her time woman werent allowed to attend certain colleges and so she studied for artists instead. She was a part of a group called the impressionists, where impressionistic artists came together becasue their type of work was looked down upon. Also the Civil war was going on around that time.

Mary basically worked with paints and prints, making her work known by showing it in galleries and seling some. Although not a lot of people appreciated her type of work. Her most famous pieces of work would have to be The Child's Bath, Little Girl in Blue Armchair, and The Cup of Tea.
